While Tales titles are often ported to new consoles after their original release, these remakes are rarely localized. Except when indicated by naming, the main Tales entries are separate from each other apart from gameplay mechanics and themes. Since the first installment was released in 1995, the Tales series has grown to include the main entries and multiple spin-offs that derive multiple gameplay and narrative elements from the main entries. As of 2022, the series has shipped over 25 million units worldwide. The series has been gaining popularity in the West since the release of Tales of Symphonia, which is still considered one of its most popular games. While generally seen as a niche series in English-speaking regions, Tales is considered to be among the most important JRPG franchises in Japan. Most of the main Tales games have been localized for North America and Europe, although almost none of the spinoff titles have been released abroad. The series was created by Yoshiharu Gotanda. Multiple people have become linked with the series, including character designers Kōsuke Fujishima and Mutsumi Inomata, producers Hideo Baba and Makoto Yoshizumi, and composer Motoi Sakuraba. The series is characterized by its art style, which draws from Japanese manga and anime, and its action-based fighting system called the "Linear Motion Battle System". While entries in the series generally stand independent of each other with different characters and stories, they are commonly linked by their gameplay, themes and high fantasy settings. First begun in 1995 with the development and release of Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom, the series currently spans seventeen main titles, multiple spin-off games and supplementary media in the form of manga series, anime series, and audio dramas. The Tales series is a franchise of fantasy role-playing video games published by Bandai Namco Entertainment (formerly Namco), and developed by its subsidiary, Namco Tales Studio until 2011 and presently by Bandai Namco Studios. Namco Tales Studio (formerly Wolf Team) (1995–2011) Each entry in the series uses its own font and styling. “Then I’ll just have to keep telling you so.The Tales of series logo, used in the series' 25th anniversary logo. Do you want to meet him?”Įlle starts looking around immediately. “I’m glad everything worked out.” She is silent for a moment before remembering. It wasn’t like the other woman chose to make this Milla disappear. I would have chosen you, too.”Įveryone had chosen her, hadn’t they? Even Daddy chose her.Įverything was bittersweet from the start, so she shouldn’t blame anyone. The spirit’s arm tightened around her increasing the warmth. “As if I have a choice.”Īfter a minute, though, Elle speaks more sincerely. “But you, young lady, will stay here with me.”Įlle gives a little laugh. “Good,” Elle says even though it is painful to say. “It won’t be long until Elle is born again.” Her arm came around her in a hug, but again, there was only warmth. “Yes,” Milla said, but she moved closer to her. By the look on Milla’s face, the woman had at least considered it as well. A part of Elle had wished that Milla was her mommy. Her mommy died when she was too young to really remember her. Elle feels that she should say something but she isn’t sure what. She does not realize she said it aloud until Milla looks at her. Her hair is a light blonde, nearly the exact shade as Elle’s. He is cooking at the stove with a warm smile on his face. The blackness swirls faster, then a scene of Ludger’s apartment reflects on its surface. She is sure she is crying now, at least in spirit, although she is not sure if she is still capable and cannot feel any wetness. Ludger is the person she cares about most after Milla. “Just focus on who it is that you want to see.” Milla stops at its edge and closes her eyes. She stretches out a hand that Elle takes even though she cannot feel any solidness. That is one of the privileges about death. Her hand reaches out to pat my head, but all I feel is a warmth there. Someone who I’ve wanted to see again so badly. The pink dot grows into the form of a person. There is nothing but open white space until I notice a distant pink dot. Without consciously doing anything to move closer, I do so. The next thing I know I am surrounded by white light. My vision darkens and I lose consciousness. I smile softly as the energy seeps from me. “Goodbye Ludger,” I whisper as he strokes my face, tears in his eyes. He has already given me so much now it is my turn to give to him. Not Ludger who has already done so much for me, who would never be able to know his own Elle. He loves me, and it feels warm and nice in my chest. Just let me go.” I am honestly touched by his sentiment.
